About

About Johanna

I am a multimedia artist, community gardener and forager based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

My artwork ranges from media productions such as short films, soundscapes and interviews to visual art pieces such as sculptures, illustrations and wildcraft. Woven into each piece is a sense of awe for the natural world and a radical re-imagining of our relationships with nature and one another.

My background in horticulture, mycology and botany come together in my work as a socially engaged artist. Through foraging and wildcrafting workshops, I aim to cultivate an intuitive connection to the natural world as well as build community resilience.

Workshops

foraging, wildcrafting and gardening workshops

I run guided foraging, nature journaling and wildcrafting walks, focussing on reciprocal foraging practices and how to get more confident in identifying wild foods. They are a relaxed environment to learn more about Edinburgh's local ecology and a lovely way to meet new people while learning about nature together. I am also available for gardening workshops and run workshops for community growing projects around the city.

I especially care about enabling nature education for groups and individuals who may face barriers to outdoor learning and nature connection. All privately run walks and workshops are run on a pay-as-you-can sliding-scale basis with capacity for free spots.

I've worked with a variety of projects, groups and organisations including Edinburgh Lothian Greenspace Trust, VOCAL Edinburgh Carers' Hub and the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.

“The walk made me appreciate the wealth of flora & fauna in urban areas more. Hana has a broad knowledge of a range of topics, relating to Holyrood Park and this really helped to make for a fascinating trek about everything from green medicines to wassailing customs."

Myceliart Collective

I’m a co-founder of Myceliart, a collaborative network of artists, who draw creative inspiration from the fascinating world of fungi. We organise community events that creatively engage with mycology, as well as LGBTQIA+ safe spaces for exploring nature and its wonders.

As part of the Myceliart collective, I had the pleasure of co-curating the Fungi & Folklore Community Exhibition with Oona Dooley at Granton Hub in October 2023, celebrating the intersection of art, folklore and the mycological world.

Check out our Eventbrite for any upcoming forays, workshops or events.
